June didn’t come out of her reverie until Calvin turned off the highway and onto the road running past the lake. She sat straighter, looking around.

“The Fallside?” she asked, turning to him. “Really?”

“We’re on a date, aren’t we?” He felt defensive. “I wanted to take you someplace nice.”

The Fallside Restaurant was housed in an elegant old mill set beside the bank of waterfalls named after Calvin’s ancestor. The restaurant had a reputation for gourmet, expensive food served in tiny portions and was usually booked weeks in advance.

Calvin had managed to get a last-minute reservation by pulling some strings with the owner, who was looking for a deal on slate flooring. The Fallside wasn’t exactly his style, but he remembered how June had always talked about going there and splurging on a meal. He’d thought it would be a good place to take her for their first date.

Well, their second first date.

“Goddamnit,” June swore, and he looked over at her in surprise.

“What?”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were taking me to Fallside? I’m not dressed right.”

“You look fine,” he said, honestly confused. Hell, she looked more than just “fine.” She looked incredible.

June frowned at him and tugged at her pants. “I am wearing jeans.”

Amused, he reached over and patted her hand. “I won’t let them throw you out.”

“Thanks,” she muttered and threw herself back in the seat.

He pulled into the parking lot and stopped the truck in an empty spot. The old mill and the tall trees surrounding it sparkled under a blanket of little white lights in the summer evening, while the rumble of the Hardy Falls thundered in the background.

“You do realize everyone in town is going to know you brought me here,” she said suddenly.

He turned to face her more fully. “Yes.” That had been part of the plan.

She studied him, then smiled. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

He touched her hair before pulling back. “Stay where you are so I can open your door for you,” he ordered.

She rolled her eyes. “Woof.”

Grinning, he got out of the truck and jogged around to get her door. He offered a hand to help her descend, which earned him another eye-roll, but she took it.

“Come on,” he said, tugging gently. “We have reservations.”

She said something under her breath that sounded like “Christ,” but let him escort her to the glittering building. Inside the front doors, a tall, slender hostess dressed in an elegant black dress stood behind a podium. She gave them a cold, professional smile that did not move much of her exquisitely made-up face.

“Yes, sir?” she asked Calvin politely.

“We have reservations,” he answered. “Hardy. Seven thirty.”

The young woman swept them with a comprehensive gaze that took in his lack of a jacket and tie, as well as June’s jeans, but she inclined her head. The owner really wanted that flooring.

“Follow me.”

She gathered up two leather-bound menus and led June and Calvin through the crowded restaurant to a small table by one of the plate glass windows that had been installed in the old building to give patrons a view of the lake.
